Best TV Shows of 2012

I've been looking forward to critics' TV lists and thought I'd make my own this year. I used to make year-end lists of my favorite albums, but I don't feel like I've been able to keep up with all the music I'm interested in, at least not as quickly as it's been released. I feel like I need to start at the beginning, so I need some time to catch up. I also need to buy some DVDs or downloads. I wish they would air the whole series over like AMC did with Breaking Bad and HBO did with The Sopranos (back when I had HBO). Networks should do that more often if they want to pick up new viewers for acclaimed shows.

Hi, Mark! I've heard good things about both of those shows, though I must say I've purposely resisted American Horror Story. After watching Glee, I don't trust Ryan Murphy to produce a coherent show. Sons of Anarchy is one of those shows I'd like to start from the beginning, so I'd need to get DVDs or downloads, and I'd need more time.

I've seen very, very few of these. I have the DVD (season 1)/blu-ray (season 2) sets of Sherlock, and catch Dr. Who online. I see the occasional clips from Stewart and Colbert online. I haven't seen the Simpsons in years. Otherwise... I've heard the names of a few of those. Of course, very few of them are broadcast here, and a lot of (legitimate) online streaming sites are region-locked, so it's not too surprising I've not come across many of them.

Yeah, living in a distant, non-English-speaking country would be a slight problem. Maybe you can recommend some anime or nutty Japanese game shows to me or something. From this list, I think you would especially like Fringe (about to end with season 5), The Walking Dead, Warehouse 13, Alphas, and Grimm--basically, the more SF-oriented shows. (Warehouse 13 and Grimm are the creations of Buffy/Angel alumni, by the way.) And shows like Breaking Bad and Parks and Recreation may not have a particular hook for you, but they are just top-notch shows.
