Just got off the phone with my 80-year-old mom. She just finished four hours volunteering for Obama at a Metro stop, registering voters, which is what she has signed up to do every weekday. I love that. It reminds of my Dad during the last presidential election -- he's a very work-defined guy, and had lost a long-time job due to some really ugly politics a few months before, and it was one of those things where he suddenly seemed completely unmoored and about 10 years older... until he found just the right kind of focus doing whole weekends of door-to-door canvassing for Kerry up in Allentown. He said that in all the years of responsible day jobs and donating to campaigns, he'd been missing the kind of one-on-one politics he used to do as a student.
