Never tell stories like this to a woman who used to cry over Puff the Magic Dragon and possibly still does. (No, honestly! "His head was bent in sorrow/Green scales fell like rain ... without his lifelong friend Puff could not be brave ..." I'm sorry, I have to be alone now.)

Thank you!

In the store, I once saw a dad tell his very little boy that, no, he couldn't have a cartoon character backback. He wasn't a baby, so he needed to pick a big boy one, and DON'T YOU DARE CRY.

I wanted to punch him in the face very much.

Aww, poor baby!Dan. Maybe when he's all grown up he can ask Casey to buy him a pony.

Why didn't he give Paint to Sam? Too painful?

Danny knuckled his eyes hard and swallowed. "Maybe Sam could have him instead? He's just little."

His dad made a funny choking noise, and squeezed Danny's hand. "I don't think Sammy has the knack."

Can't take it! Sad!!

Great writing, though. Awesome talent for conveying a lot with not so many words.
