Watched the premiere of Kings last night. Really enjoyed it - I highly recommend watching it on Hulu or the NBC website if you didn't catch it.

The basic premise is a retelling of the story of David and Saul in a kingdom that's a sort of re-imagining of the contemporary U.S. Ian McShane (Al Swearengen of Deadwood) plays King Silas, and the show ( Read more... )

I liked it too, although I think right now it's more of an intellectual interest than really being involved and caring about the characters - though that could change. There's so much going on with it stylistically - the way it looks like a glitzy prime time soap and sounds like a heavy classical drama - that it was distracting me at times, but there's complex human stuff going on underneath.

Like, was that whole cell phone episode set up to create "scandal" about Jack's incorrigible heterosexuality? That queen is really a piece of work.

The way it uses the Biblical source is interesting, not just for the allusions, but the way it effects the whole sociology of the AU. You have this Old Testament interventionist God side by side with viral internet media.

I must admit, I adore the overblown language just because it makes Ian McShane sound like he's still on Deadwood (without the colorful variations on cursing). I can definitely see your point about it being distracting stylistically, though.

Yes, the reveal on the cell phone thing was one of my favorite scenes - so much effort to keep one man looking straight in the press. Though I still can't decide if the secretary was in on it, or if the queen had her bra stolen and planted.

I'm really fascinated by the way they're setting up the religious angle. People are living in a true theocracy without even comprehending that, it seems like. There's going to be some potentially interesting stuff with Silas resisting what has been presented to him as God's will while struggling with these concrete examples of God's existence and will - I'm interested to see how they're going to play that.
