A spell with the Staff of One backfires, and Elizabeth is transported across time and space into the La Brea hangout. Elizabeth and Nico hate one another immediately, thinking the other to be bossy and more than a bit moody. All of the Runaways suspect Elizabeth of being a little evil, since she's an adult. (Chase doesn't really care if she's evil or not, having an evil streak himself these days.)

Nico spends a few weeks trying any number of word combinations, but is unable to send Elizabeth back.

Elizabeth sticks around with the kids, since she doesn't really have anywhere else to go, and they eventually accept her to an extent. Nico appreciates that when she asks someone to cut her, Elizabeth is the only one who never flinches.

During his continued investigations into the lives of the Baudelaire siblings, Lemony Snicket happens upon a Vortex to Foreign Dimensions, which he later discovers was opened by Hatake Kakashi using his Mangekyou Sharingan during his most recent doujutsu contest with Gai (this competition was one chosen by Kakashi).

After entering the vortex, Lemony finds himself in a place filled with people whose lives are even more unfortunate than his own and those of the Baudelaires. While most of these people are all too willing to disclose every misfortune that has ever befallen them (they often do so loudly and violently), Kakashi himself is more of a mystery.

They strike up a friendship of sorts (as much of a friendship as two men who have been through so much and tell so little can share) while Kakashi recovers the chakra to send Lemony back to his own world.

Kakashi likes that Lemony never once asks him about his mask. They're both men who understand the value of disguise and the power of keeping one's face to himself.
