How long would it take to walk some version of this experiment?

Let's spend an entry on breaking this down because, really, you need this answer before you can determine IF it can be done.

I'll give you 40 miles/day, but only if there is considerable training beforehand. Few people could just wake up and do that...women even train for the 3-day breast cancer walk, and that is 60 miles in 3 days.

Also, one of the routes you posted was lovely because it pretty much followed Route 66 from Chicago on West. You should be able to find the real mileage for that.

Well, you have to examine the paths that you'd be walking as well. If you're, say, taking the bike paths, it may be significantly longer. Because, remember, you can't really walk the highways legally.

I tried riding my bike to Springfield from Dayton and it took double the distance.

I'll worry about the roadways once a course can be genuinely roughly plotted.
