An Experiment: Walking Poetry's America, Pt. 5

Apr 23, 2010 10:57

So what hit my radar today? This guy doing a tour of dead poets' gravesites to generate interest in a day of national recognition of dead poets. It's kind of cool. He's done a version of the tour before but he starts his 2010 version today. I'll probably try to set-up a reading for the national observation on October 7 once I determine some things ( Read more... )

Dead poets and cemetaries. That's right up my alley. How can I help? Reading at Thurber's grave? Or David Citino's?

That's one long walk you got mapped out.

Find a notable dead poet in or as close to Columbus as possible would be the best place to start. Thurber's poetry credentials are too light, but Dunbar (Dayton) and Citino (?) might ring true. I have noted no stipulation on HOW great the dead poet has to be, but I imagine that's intentional.

I do not have access to the Dispatch archives. Not sure if CML does to see if Citino has a gravesite.

Note that you are not actually authorized to kill any poets for the sake of this show.

In the world of the hypothetical experiement, though, I think concentrating the walking route with poetry heavy areas increases the chance of a viable outcome. Walking through an area like Chicago or New York or Columbus is great because you have multiple poetry events on multiple nights of the week - so whenever you walk through there, you should be alright. And New England appears like a region that puts that out even better, because there are so many readings that you could hop them while also making forward progress.

How are you doing this? Have you built a super genius lair with a giant light up map full of pins?

Mwaahahaha.

I agree on the poetry areas: go where the concentration is...WITHIN REASON.

I also imagine this as kind of like when Catherine the Great would tour the Russian countryside, and her people would be riding a day ahead of her with a proper stock of wheat and well fed happy playing peasants in colorful clothes to make it look like all the villages were prosperous and happy. IE, I see Karen G and Dave Noble speeding to each destination just ahead of the walking poet and throwing up a poetry reading right in your path.

Walking Poet: The poets look the same, no matter where I go!

Familiar Looking Red Headed Poet Dude in Iowa: You're just fatigued, sir. Keep walking.

I like this version. It's got Ypsilanti on it. Ain't no poetry here, but it's a good place for weary wandering poets.
