Last night's slam

Last night's slam was hot action, yo!

None of the slams are wack, but some have more heat than others. Sometimes that's because the room is packed (it was). Sometimes that's because the poetry is good (it was). Sometimes it's because the banter and heckling is strong (it was). Sometimes its because the open mic is fresh (it was).

It was a great night to catch poetry in Columbus. I'm glad I could make it out to see everyone. I was a little disappointed that Laura wasn't in the slam, but getting to see the two pieces she did made up a little bit for me missing her feature the night before.

Yes to Louise, Ed, Wali, Vernell and you! And Patrick - Wow! Like I told him last night, the Quiet Storm is quiet no more. I can't wait for his feature tomorrow night.

Kudos to you Zod on the slam win!

Patrick "Lilith" was particularly impressive as was "Employees Must Wash Hands Before Returning To Work".

I've seen poems get forgotten in the mix when they are done in the first slot of any slam with that many poets. Getting that "1" -- ug -- you quickly go through the five stages of grief:

1) Shock and denial -- The "hell no" stage
2) Pain and guilt -- The "what did I ever do to deserve this" stage
3) Anger and Bargaining - The "Dear God" stage
4) Depression, Reflection, Loneliness - the "Poor little me" stage
....

I won't go through them all but I got to "acceptance" pretty fast and said to myself, "Just give up to God." Then I added to myself, "We'll talk about exactly what you're trying to mean by this 'God' thing later, for now, just do that damn poem."
