Review: GV7

Jul 20, 2008 18:08

Because I suspect my latest review of a poetry documentary may not make it to the site that commissioned me for it, here is my review of Bob Bryan's "Graffiti Verite 7: Random Urban Static: The Iridescent Equations of Spoken Word".

It was not kind, but they've gotten a review from me before and it was somewhat tough, so I have faith.
To that end, I ( Read more... )

You could have been a LOT meaner (and we have seen that, son!). I wonder how many people who performed for this thing were happy that they'd gotten some soundtrack laid over their work.

There are some *bad* poets who you can tell are listening to a hip-hop beat in their head while they're badly rhyming their piece. Sounds like that's what the filmmaker is trying to superimpose on everyone he captured. Yikes.

Here. I found the website where all these reviews are. Check them out for yrself:
http://graffitiverite.com/GV7FILMREVIEWS.html

I think these opinions say something about the quality of this film. I couldn't say it any better.

Oh yea, I also found on the same website the links to some youtube clips

"Believe nothing or noone, seek the truth for yourself."

I also found their email address bryworld@aol.com. Maybe you can get the filmmaker himself to address some of these interesting issues.

BTW just go to google and type in Graffiti Verite and you can get a busload of info about this filmmaker too. My work is done, everything else is in your court! Peace

I note your lack of admitting who you are.

My court finds you in contempt.

so noted my friend! The reason why they have the "Anonymous key" is because they realize that we isolationists / reclusives also have the right not to publicize our ficticious names.

My court finds you narrow-minded and unable to fit your ego through the hoop of my finely crafted privacy. Patriot Act my left foot !

Which means you're involved in the film making (I'm guessing by your poor logic and language use, that you're a fellow slammer...probably one who does well on stage, not so much in print), and so have a stake in people's opinion.

Surely that means you're not really able to criticize someone else's ego.

I can see why you identify with meaner. It's just the way you think. Interesting how you flip all this.

Tis my job my friend to confront the hatas. Smooth out the edges, so to speak. Bring out the madness!

Nope no personal info, sorry dude.

There's no meanness in his review, nor my comments. I'm just saying, you obviously have a personal stake in this, so you can't come at this critically. And posting reviews from the official website of the documentary? Of course they're going to be positive, they're on the movies official site.

I also note your lack of responses to criticism. You just "confront the hatas" without backing up your opinions (except by cutting and pasting other people's opinions). Do you, perhaps, have a slew of didactic political pieces about how America is bad? I bet you do.

Question: Have you seen the movie? If not, what the hay are you / we talking about?

Until we both check it out (at least I saw the clips)perhaps you should suspend judgement. I did see The Dark Knight and LOVED it but Hellboy was deeply disappointing.

"Do you, perhaps, have a slew of didactic political pieces about how America is bad? I bet you do."

Dude you got it flipped again. I love America and understand it's potential for greatness. Where do you dig up this stuff? Psychologically they call it a "Projection." whewwwww

"In psychology, psychological projection (or projection bias) is a defense mechanism in which one attributes one’s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts or/and emotions to others.

Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted subconscious impulses/desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them. The theory was developed by Sigmund Freud and further refined by his daughter Anna Freud, and for this reason, it is sometimes referred to as "Freudian Projection"

I didn't say you hated America. I said that I guessed you had a didactic poem about how America was bad. Huge difference.

As for projection? Please don't spout Psychology 101 at me. I was a Freshman in College once, too.

And why are we having this debate? Because you took the time to come to someone's journal and post a series of anonymous comments cut-and-pasting reviews of this movie you're so attached to. I was/am curious why you are so obsessed with posting positive things about a film, especially if you are, as you claim, "new to this scene" and not associated with the film. I mean, if you haven't seen it, what's your motivation?

It seems to me the filmmaker, or at least someone tied to the DVD, is addressing them, as we speak.

This tantrum is the height of irresponsibility in my eyes, and I sincerely doubt I'll be reviewing the DVD now, not at least until there's an apology for this behavior.

I didn't think the meaner comment had anything to do with the film, so there's no need to get too defensive about that comment. I think he just meant that he has already seen Scott give out harsher reviews, to other projects if he felt like they deserved it....but of course that's probably obvious, to anyone who knows that people are entitled to their own opinions.

Actually, I'm a "she" - yes, I'm DJ Muse, but I'm a she, kind of in the minority with the woman as DJ thing, just as in the poetry thing (more men than women by a bit). I'm not anonymous, but damn I must have been sleeping to see Adam go on like this - but it's a great chuckle for the afternoon. :)

Meaner as in he saw a badly produced, slanted piece of work and was reserved in saying what a badly produced excuse it was. He could have been brutally honest and it would've come off as mean.

I suppose the difference with him and the other reviewers is he actually knew something about the subject before he saw the DVD. *shrug*

Of course, comments from some anonymous someone are about as worthwhile as those reviews from uninformed people.
