What's Really Wrong With Rush's Statement

Jan 14, 2010 10:49

I'm going to post the same two asinine quotes that everyone else is posting about Haiti right now.  The only difference in my post will be that I will post them in reverse order as they're tending to crop up so that I can focus my commentary on the one that really merits awe.

And, you know, Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and ( Read more... )

"He thought about it - with his sharp, intellectual mind - and said, "My radio show is more important than this tragedy." It is the very definition of insidious."

I think you're missing something here, Scott. This is a man who consistently uses the tagline "Talent on loan from God". He thinks his show is more important than ANYTHING. On great occasions, when I worked at WHIO, we would have to preempt his show for a scheduled sporting even or for a severe weather issue. On more than one occasion, his agents threatened to pull his show (really, the cornerstone of the lineup) if we ever moved his show again, even if it was an emergency.

Yes, the man is evil, vain, and just plain insane!

I'm not missing anythin. This is just another stick on the pile you're suggesting exists (and whichI do not disagree exists). That I have no interest in running down the litany of his crimes only means I'm focused on this one.

I'm Ice T running down the bad guy, ready for the tackle. You guys do the paperwork.

1100 WTAM in Cleveland had a guy on (I'll lay odds Trivisano is still there) who has a time or two gotten cease and desist letters from Rush.
And he's a sports guy. Makes me chuckle.

Rather than utilizing the vast resources he has at his command to even suggest that we, the citizens of the greatest country in the world, find a way to help out Haiti, he opted to look at the devastation...with his sharp, intellectual mind - and said, "My radio show is more important than this tragedy."

You nailed it. As if anticipating your reaction, he also said: "We've already donated to Haiti. It's called the U.S. income tax." He actually went on the air and actively encouraged people not to give - in order to get more attention to himself.

UGH.

It's a disaster, for God's sake. By the same token I guess we didn't need to send any money to New Orleans because they've made so much money off of tourism in the past. I mean, my god, they have casinos for god's sake. Just get that up and running and it's all solved.

Pat fucking robertson eclectic_soul January 14 2010, 22:54:06 UTC
i actually think that pat robertsons quoe is the more insidious, because Robertson is using the power of the pulpit...and he is speaking on a matter that people who follow him would deem is in his realm of expertise and influence..

he is speaking on a "factual" basis about how an entire nation of people made a pact with the devil...

implicit in that statement is the idea, thatthese people dont deserve help, and even if we do, it wont matter because god will judge them anyway... i think of the two statements, robertsons has the ability to actually cost lives...

and the absolutly fucking horrible thing about it is that Haiti is 96% Christian.... and that not a stat i just pulled out of a hat, i got it from the CIA Factbook....

I agree with a lotr what you justr said -- this is not a political problem. It shopuild not be used to make political capital. Of course.

However, you also say: "He understands tragedy. Everyone understands tragedy that isn't a sociopath even if different levels evoke different emotional responses from person to person."

I am not so sure. He's been isolated from tragedy and necessities of life for a long time. Yes, he had some health scares. But I do not know he still have an ability to sympathize and act in a compassionate way.
