You don't. You can only watch it.

If you have questions about the latest /upcoming posts or any thing you think could be included into the newsletter you can friend sb_watch for the updates and etc.

Paranoia is good. I've stopped my LJ being fed inot that whatever it is. I think all LJs are yes defualted. I am not happy about the communities not being able to opt out though. That sucks.

And what is happening is that they aren't telling anyone, they are joining you to things like this with previous permission. I think that why I don't mind google because it purpose it clear but LJ true purpose is journaling site, so it is making me odd that it acting not like one. *shrug*

Yes they are being very sneaky and as you say they aren't Google so why they are doing what they are doing is all rather strange.
