Discussion Post: Writing!

May 17, 2010 22:25

So my Creative Writing homework (the one I should be doing right now *facepalm*) is to write a personal essay on something we are passionate about. I feel this may be somewhat redundant, but I'm going to do it on writing, why I write and when I started writing and such (because I feel an essay on fandom with just garner confusion *g ( Read more... )

Yay! I love writing posts :)

Why do you write?

I can't imagine not writing. I've done it all my life whether it's fiction or academic papers. But I don't think I'd ever be able to just stop doing it.

Do you write fanfic or original fic as well?

Yep :)

When did you first start writing?

The first thing I remember was in third grade, a poem called "Rain." My teacher called it transcendent.

Where do your ideas come from?Do you get inspired my music, like I do sometimes? Or do you get nifty "what-if" ideas?

Everywhere. Television, movies, music, books, other people, historical figures, stories from my friends and family. That's why I like prompts so much because I feel like just about every story started out as a small bit of inspiration that just blooms into something bigger.

Is your original fic similar to your fanfic? Sometimes. The original fic I post online is romance for the most part, a few dark fics here and there, but the site I post on is full of romance novel lovers (which I used to be in my teenage years and ( ... )

Yeah, I would never be able to stop writing either, I'd get too many ideas and have nothing to do with them XD

WOW. That's pretty awesome about your poem in third grade! :DDDD

YES to writing for fun! And I also started writing fanfic to improve my fiction writing skills! And it really has helped a lot! :)

Oh, I love my CW class so, so much. I'm gonna be sad when the semester ends because I'm pretty sure I won't be able to take it again, I have to get semester/major related stuff out of the way. There's a club though, and they're pretty cool, so there's that!

I like writing because it's fun. And, a lot of the time, fulfilling. Fanfiction is more about fixing things (KRIPKE!!!!) or taking something how you want it, and a lot of times about the feedback from other people. I think a lot of times, original is more about having something to say about the world and saying it. There's a purpose and a story you need to tell ( ... )

HAHAHAHA, NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR WALLS OF TEXT.

There is something very full-filling about fanfic. I don't really use it to fix things, but more to explore possibilities (basically, taking something how you want it, like you said). Unless that is fixing things. AND FEEDBACK IS AWESOME.

original is more about having something to say about the world and saying it

Hmm, I'm not sure about this. I mean, I feel like that's what most people write original fic for, especially in my Creative Writing class. It kinda always bugged me, because everyone wrote like "I HAVE AN EPIC MESSAGE TO TELL AND METAPHORS AND ALLEGORIES IN MY STORY" and I'm all "Fuck, I just want to write a story, does it have to be all ~deep~? Can it just be a fun story?"

My least favorite thing is when you want to write, but you can't or when an idea doesn't gel completely or when you feel like your idea is bigger than you can possibly do it justice.

UGH. I hate this so much. I feel like I have this epic idea BUT I CANNOT PROPERLY CONVEY IT. AND IT IS WOEFUL *hugs*

I wish I had the essay I wrote for the essay portion of my GED test that was basically the same question and I came to the same conclusions about it as you :D Warning: this may get a little wall of text-y and a lot tl;dr.

Why do you write?: Because it’s something I do that I can’t really separate myself from anymore. I like being able to create something, to tell a story, to (figuratively) give birth to these characters and watch them grow. I like that writing helps me personally, because if something’s bothering me, I can find a way to work through it, whether it be through fanfic or original writing. Even if it drives me absolutely crazy sometimes and makes me a completely wreck, I can’t ever imagine quitting.

Do you write fanfic or original fic as well?: I write both. I find fanfic easier than writing original, even though I’d love to complete something original at some point. I think it’s because with fanfic you’re playing with someone else’s characters that you know are already good and feel like fully formed people, while ( ... )

And if you only write fanfic, what drives you to write fanfic?: I write both, but I want to answer these questions :D Writing fanfic, as I said above, is me exploring an area that’ll never be explored in canon and/or “fixing” that something went wrong. It’s expanding on a universe, exploring more deeply into its characters, and it’s also the experience of community. There’s not many places where you can get feedback on your writing like you can in fandom.

How did you get started writing fanfiction?: I was ten (on the cusp of eleven) when I was sleeping over my friend’s house and she showed me FFN and introduced me to fanfic. Ironically, it was Gilmore Girls fanfic. It amuses me to this day that my introduction to fanfic was through Jared Padalecki. It was later when I was alone that I went exploring the site and I found the Harry Potter section, and the rest was sort of history. It took me a bit to work up the nerve to write my own stories, but I was also so enraptured with the new and shiny of it all. I did most of my first major ( ... )

There’s not many places where you can get feedback on your writing like you can in fandom.YES! THIS IS TRUE. You get like instant feedback and really detailed stuff! The only time I've experience that is in my Creative Writing class, which is probably why I love it so ( ... )

I LOVE WALLS OF TEXT. AND YOUR EPIC RESPONSE.

(figuratively) give birth to these characters and watch them grow.

YEEEEEEEEES. SO MUCH YEEEEEEEES. MY LITTLE BRAIN BABIES.

I pretty much agree with your whole paragraph on fanfic and original fic. They're both hard, in their own ways. With fanfic, you have to make sure you grasped someone else's character's properly and not piss off the fandom. But it's also easier, because someone laid the groundwork out for you and you don't have to spend time world building and such. But original is hard because, as you said, EVERYTHING COMES FROM YOU, SO YOU ONLY HAVE YOURSELF TO BLAME IF IT SUCKS AND IT'S SO HARD WHEN PEOPLE TELL YOU YOUR BRAIN BABIES SUCK.

Oh god, I started writing when I was pretty young too, because I was constantly making up IDEAS and I put them down on paper. That's awesome that fanfic got you writing :D

Oh god, yes! I even have playlists for ORIGINAL fic. And for fanfic! Random music will screw me up so I need music I've picked out to set the mood.
