There were several reasons not to ask Deidara to accompany him on this mission, more than there were good reasons he should come along, but in Itachi's mind quality was prevalent to quantity, and every reason for having Deidara along was an important one ( ... )

Itachi and Deidara had different ideas about being professional. Neither of them had much had any other life than that of a shinobi's, but for the other it was a matter of necessity, where for the other it was a matter of passion. However, the reason beneath all methods and practice was the same, a lack of anything else.

Deidara knew nothing about any monsters, and he suspected those beasts would have already attacked if they were about to. But he didn't bother arguing, a habit that was a part of his mission mode. When something was to be accomplished, there was no fucking point bickering around with Sasori. Itachi was not Deidara's partner, but for now, the same courtesy would be extended to him.

"I see. I doubt much of it lingers after getting wind under our wings," Deidara said simply while standing up, slow and deliberate. "Shall we then?"

Without stalling any longer, Deidara pulled out a bit of clay from a pouch on his hips, slipping it past the lips on his palm.

There was little point arguing; aerial predators could track them easily enough, but so long as one of them knew and acknowledged that fact, so long as one was prepared to defend against an aerial onslaught (in the event one occurred), then there was nothing to worry about.

“Let’s get on with it,” Itachi acceded, “I don’t want to waste the daylight.”

Sharingan-activated eyes observed as Deidara’s hand dived into the pouch at his waist and retrieved a lump of clay which was then worked laboriously behind the puckered lips of the mouth on Deidara’s palm. Even now, despite recognizing the usefulness of Deidara’s special abilities, Itachi still found it to be in poor taste...

...but then, there was very little about Deidara he was actually approving of.

Aerial predators, however, would most likely lack a keen sense of smell, like most birds did. They would probably see them as a blob of dark within the mists and follow them by sight. Deidara wasn't exactly worried; fighting foes was every day business for him and it was hard to find that nerving anymore. Aerial battle was hardly a new form of combat for him in any case ( ... )
