Sasuke’s mind was in a million places as he cleaned the dojo, mentally walking down narrowed thought-filled corridors with more doors than he could count. So many things were happening at once, the talk with Mello and the hope he had provided, the “gifts” so elegantly left at their doorsteps, the killers and monsters that still roamed and lurked, and in the end he was left to wonder how much of it he could use to his advantage. If he could balance each item, if he could work it well, then maybe it would knit together like the lines in a sweater, complete something out of various strings.

It all started with questions. It all started with doubt. If enough people were riled, if enough people cared, then the first flames were set. The more things that happened here, the more monsters eating children, the more presents and familiar faces from home, the more visions, then the more incensed citizens would become, the easier to move like cattle charging fences ( ... )

More than the physical distance, it was the mental, the emotional, that cause Sakura the most anguish. It's an ache in her heart like a cancer, but an old one, a disability she had, through work and toil, learned to function with. Simple necessity, with him gone from her life for so long. Two years was a long time. Time enough for a girl's heart to be well broken, to find the disparate parts of itself, to gather them up and then, slowly and with effort, begin to mend. Sakura could say so with authority. She'd done it herself ( ... )

Not the same person. Sasuke himself wanted to believe that, to see that the old sections of himself had been cast out like demons from an exorcism, and now, truly devoid of distractions, he would be able to truly see with his tunnel vision. In essence, that’s what all this was for, this tangled past, his fight with Naruto out past the docks, with every quip and angry dismissal had all been for this ( ... )
