My sources for dojo terminology-but I probably mangled them; please correct me!

You enter the genkan to take off your shoes. The sliding panels to the tatami are closed. Someone seems to be shining a torch or carrying a candle: through the tiny cracks there's a moving glow.

You slide the panel open and are engulfed in fire.

It's silver-white-blue, blinding, and rapturous.

Before you can think to run or fight, the heatless light continues on past you; a creature circling the room. Rather than alarmed, you're more likely to feel refreshed, even optimistic.

A figure of a man becomes visible seated in the shimoseki. The moment the panel opened, the light began to dwindle away. It now seems to retract into him-into his hands, or something he's holding. Which, before your eyes can readjust to the dim and more colourful ambient light, he's tucked away inside his jacket.

Standing like a heron, (likably hunched,) he limpshuffles toward the kamiza to welcome you properly.

notes:
  • Hermione could recognize the Patronus Charm. (To cleanse the space/himself between meetings.) Lacking Dementors to necessitate weaponizing, it always struck me as a meditative spell.
  • Jannat al-ma'wa - "garden of sanctuary" (Qu'ran) (in lieu of something more specifically Sufist. Rumí fans, help?)
