Deneve narrowed her eyes at the bleached-blond man moping into his alcohol. She'd pegged him as one of the many who came in here with sorrows to drown. A waste of time, in her opinion, but she wasn't about to turn away Helen's customers. It was a bit interesting, being in here night after night, watching the people. Deciphering their reasons for coming to a place like this.

It wasn't as if she had anything better to do.

Still, if she'd thought he was going to cause property damage, she might have had a word with him before now.

"I hope you don't intend to break anything else while you're here." Dead calm, she addressed him from the opposite side of the bar. The proprietor's side.

He looked up at her under his lids.

"Hoping's dangerous, love. Don't you know?"

He threw down some ivories to get a replacement for the drink he'd spilled. "For the guy on the end. So good for business really, isn't it? I spill more, you sell more. Should keep me here on retainer."

She collected the ivories off of the counter and fixed him with icy silver eyes.

"And you? How drunk are you planning to get? If the answer is drunk enough to forget the rules of this establishment as well as whatever woman or man caused you to come here tonight, then you'll have to answer to me." She narrowed her eyes again. "And you don't want that."

It wasn't a threat exactly. Just a warning. With a place like this to look after, she was aware of the need for a good bouncer. And she and Helen had concurred that there was no one better for the job than Deneve herself.

"Maybe that's exactly what I want." He lifted his scar-crossed eyebrow and leaned his elbow on the bar at her. "How about it? Can I skip the earning it straight to the punishment?"

But the audacity just wasn't in his eyes.
