[The Forge is off-kilter, the screen reflecting the corner of an ornate mirror, and of flickering lights. The shadow of movement repeats itself, accompanied by the sound of a low purr. A small sigh follows, and there's a moment more of nothing but this sound, until long fingers reach out to adjust the view ( Read more... )

What are you doing, Remus?

[ What is Tonks doing? She doesn't know either. Tonks is the cause of Bellatrix's amnesia. ]

Nor do I. Except that if there is work to be done, I could hardly live with turning my back now. If this is real progress, it is to be solidified. If she is to relapse, it won't be because I decided to wash my hands of it.

Or if it's simpler, we can think of this as a test. If this is a trick, I walk in willingly, before she can take any less wary. If she's going back to the way she was, I'd rather know sooner than later.

I thought it would be easier. I didn't think it'd be like this.

[ She reaches up and buries her face in her hands. This is not what she had wanted. ]

I don't know what to do. Did I make the wrong choice?

I think whether it was right or wrong is irrelevant, compared with how to proceed. I'm attempting the possibility that she was mentally ill and is now sane, in which case, for most intents and purposes, this is a new person to deal with and attempt to secure, so the old one never again resurfaces. Keep that Bellatrix well and truly behind bars, and the best way to do so is to strengthen the new one to be her constant jailer.

…But I can't help but feel it was the right choice. Especially if this is the outcome. If it's even possible, it's more than I ever believed. And, in trying anyway, which I did, before you did, it's far more than I ever achieved.

I think, whether it's what you intended or thought you desired, you were more giving and creative than most would find possible. You gave her a new chance. I hope I'm not being foolish in wanting to build on that action. To honour both of you.

I'll take reinvention over vengeance any day.

[ For several moments, Tonks is silent. She lowers her hands, she lowers her head. ]

I don't want the other one to come back.

[ Her voice is just above a whisper. Tonks knows what will happen if she does. ]

Remus, you are far more generous than I could ever be towards her. I don't know that I can help her. I don't know that I want to either. But she's my responsibility. I'm the reason she is like she is.

[He gives her a moment of silence, which works because he's in need of one himself. Having a live feed open on a forge on some level demands interaction even when break is called for; it's with few people that he can find the prerequisite level of comfort to be on a forge and say nothing.

Perhaps it's wrong that for a good part of that silent moment, he's not thinking about how miraculous this could be, or how foolish he could be for continuing to fall for it, or which of them is smarter at different things and how much better when they pool their resources to inform one another, and who may be right and how "right" and "wrong" in this instance are a false dichotomy to which the answer remains 無 (side thought of River ( ... )
