Day 330: ~ Identity ~

Jul 13, 2011 00:20

[It's late night, early morning when Roxas contemplates asking some questions to the late-night owls, the insomniacs, and the unrested population of Scorched. He has too much on his mind, but he knows stress has been building up from the recent rally to his overly frequent trips into the mist and the constant nightmares that come with it. It's ( Read more... )

[Sleep, while not something of great necessity for his kind, is something that Ulquiorra does partake in now and then. He's used to wakefulness, to watching and staying alert, a habit that never really vanishes when you spend most of the early part of your existence trying to make sure you aren't eaten by something bigger.

In this instance, sleep has not come, but then those nights have been many, here in Anatole.

Most of the time he merely listens to the drivel over the Forges, but the familiar voice that speaks up so late in the night asks some unusual if not interesting things.]

...it is not something I have ever considered before.

[But now it's gotten him to think about it. He divulges no more on that, however.]

I considered this a minor inconvenience more than a vacation.

Yeah, I've only just started thinking about it recently. [He chuckles, voice growing a little more quiet.] This place has been making me think about a lot of things. Calling it a "minor inconvenience" sounds better than a vacation, though...Even if it has gotten bigger than that and I'm starting to think I don't really know what a vacation is supposed to be like.

I imagine being pulled away from the things you knew and the place you were supposed to be gives plenty of reason and time for thought.

...I wouldn't know what a vacation is.

That makes sense...And learning more things too.

Well, I only had one vacation day and it was kinda boring, but you're supposed to do stuff you like on that day.

[That first one's a loaded question if ever there was one, bringing about maybe half a dozen uncomfortable things by association.]

[So the easy answer gets picked instead.]

Of course you wouldn't be the same.

Why not?

[Of course Roxas is going to make this difficult, but he just wants to know as much as he can...Not that answers will stop the flow of questions.]

You are your memories, aren't you? Essentially.

Then...what if you knew you were a different person and wanted to be the person you were before? What do you do?

Memories define where you've been, not who you are. Unless you let them.

[She sounds far more concerned with the other question, though.] ...There's sea-salt flavored ice cream? But I thought ice cream is supposed to be sweet, not savory...

...Is it bad if you let them? How do you know if you have?

[Don't worry, Quorra, ice cream's a very important topic on Roxas' list.] I thought so too, but it's actually sweet AND salty. It's really great and...pretty much one of my favorite things-- especially when my friends are with me so we can eat ice cream together.

Sometimes. When thoughts of the past overpower the thoughts of the present or the future, that's when you have to worry.

...Hmm. I'll have to try it sometime!

[Well, that's not a good thought. Roxas makes a hum of acknowledgement as he mentally takes note. Were the dreams of Sora sort of like that then...? Could dreams work the same way? He's not sure.]

...If I find out where they make make it, do you want to have some with me?

We're still ourselves, even if we don't remember it. We all have our natures hidden inside. Memories are just the things that keep those in check.

[...]

And I... do they actually make sea-salt ice cream?

But...where is it inside? It sounds likes something you can't see, but how do you know it's there?

[Yes, those are legit questions of concern.]

In my world they do.

It's not exactly a vacation. But it has its pros and cons just like any other place.

And as for memories... well, the things that happen to you shape you as a person. They can change you. If you lost your memories, no, you wouldn't be the same person. You'd be a different version of yourself.

I...guess so. [Except he's debating which weighs more: the pros or cons.] What would you call it, Riza?

Is it okay to be a different version then? I think I might be different from the Roxas you met...Is that still okay?

Hm. 'Leave of absence' seems to be the most appropriate description. I intend to return to my world if at all possible and go back to my duties. But it's not as if this city is particularly restful.

Of course it's okay. There's nothing wrong with being different.

... Is there anything the matter, Roxas?

...Just got a lot of things on my mind. I really want to see my friends right now too.
