[The screen flickers, on off on, along with the audio as whoever it is mashes the buttons randomly. When the video feed finally steadies it shows... the ground, outside. And someone's bare foot, very small and very dirty, barely visible in the dark. The voice coming from off-screen sounds like a young girl muttering to herself

Oh. Sorry. Uh, NOT THAT YOU CAN SEE THIS.
[Static, and the voice function comes on.]
Toph?! Hey, is that you? Did you bring Katara?

Aang? There you are! I've been searching everywhere for you guys! ...Uh, why is your voice coming from a little box?
[there's a loud thump somewhere nearby]
Where are you hiding?

Look, I know you're kind of a petite guy, but I don't think you're small enough to fit in this thing.
...right?
Um, I tried bending it just now. Maybe I shouldn't have done that.

The view of her eyes too, and, well. The loudmouthed kid gave it away.]
Blind, huh? Careful with that thing. It's called a Forge, a communication device. I'll talk you through the instructions on how to use it. [Insert instructions here, all in a calm, slow monotone.]

...huh?
Hey! Listen buddy, I don't know who you are, but just because I'm blind doesn't make me helpless. I don't need to be babied.
[she pauses, and then the defensiveness (mostly) drops from her voice]
But... thanks. That helps a lot. So, I can talk to people with this thing even though they're not nearby?

I never said you were helpless. Just giving you a heads-up. Different world, different place and the locals aren't nice enough to teach you the basics.
[And the others on this thing can and will fuss. And one thing Riku loathes directed at him is fussing.]
No problem. There's a few more things you might need to know - places to go, local etiquette, money, jobs and things, but your friend might be a lot more willing to teach you.
But just in case. [A run-down of where she would be, then a general idea of the city and how it's laid out. She'll eventually have to learn to make her way around, and while he can't hold her hand while she goes and takes a walk to acquaint herself, she would probably appreciate a good general idea of the lay of the land.]

If I ever run into the jerks that brought me here, I'm going to kick their butts so hard their grandparents will be begging for mercy!
[there's a loud noise then, and it sounds a little bit like stones clattering against stone]
Anyway... I appreciate your help. I can find my way around just fine, but it's kind of hard to tell the difference between buildings when they all feel the same, you know?

[a small, seemingly distracted pause, as there are some incomprehensible mutterings] Anyway, welcome to Anatole...not that it's all too welcoming at the moment...what with the murder and sun disappearing...[a little sigh]

So, Anatole, huh? Thanks for the welcome, but I don't plan on staying long.

Yeah, read from your friend's post. Blind, right? At least it won't be harder to get around...? [pause. Crap.]
...That was probably in bad taste. Sorry.
Anyway, doesn't seem to matter what your plans are...this place doesn't appear to want to let people leave once they're here. Doesn't mean we're not still trying, but...no one's found a way, yet.
I'm Kaien, by the way. And you're...Toph?

I've heard worse. And I don't have a hard time getting around. I'm not helpless.
And I don't like being kept somewhere against my will. If there's a way out, I'm just going to have to find it myself. Maybe you guys are just looking in the wrong places.
...people here are big on listening in on other peoples' conversations, aren't they? But, yeah, that's me. The one and only!
