my second is self, my third is the fifth.
my fourth is the first of a word meaning shine.
my fifth takes us back to the start of this rhyme.

Not usually one for the thinking or the problem-solving, but syntax: that he can do.

First, second, third what?

In "strife" but not "sift". That's how letter riddles go. Answer is "R" or "E".
Second is "Self". Answer: "I".
Third is the fifth. Sol? E? The hell? [A shame Lupin can't help…]
Word meaning shine? For pete's sake. Narrow it down a bit, love… [not realising she had by knowing her audience]
Start of the rhyme. Same letter as the first. …Or the same letter as the beginning of "rhyme". So First and Fifth are both "R".

R-I-V-something-R.

Something must be an "e" mustn't it.

What means "shine" that starts with-?
