[There's an audible click as someone messes with their new communication device for the first time. A bit of disgruntled muttering follows before the speaker actually addresses whoever might be listening.]

So this hunk of junk works while my ear piece and cell phone don't? Really? Qué gacho. Breach better not have anything to do with this... ( Read more... )

I'm using it. And you've been dumped in Anatole, so...I don't think there's going to be any Jump Jets showing up for you anytime soon. Sorry.

[...]

What is a Jump Jet, anyway?

"Anatole"? I'm not the most knowledgeable guy with geography, but still... Not a place I've ever heard of.

A Jump Jet's a type of Providence aircraft. If Providence can pick up on where I am, they'll come for me. They can't afford to leave their best agent stranded.

That's okay, it'd be the same even if you were good at geography. Unless you'd been here before, which I don't think you have been. I've been here a long time and I'm pretty sure I would've remembered your voice. Oh, and you probably would've recognized the name if you had. ...Maybe. Some people remember being here before, some people don't.

[She takes a moment to think about that before continuing.]

Yeah, things are pretty strange here.

I'm Elena.

Okay, that's...really confusing. Why wouldn't some people remember being here before? Is there a brainwashing treatment on the way out?

[Despite the slight sarcastic edge in his voice, the idea of forgetting something as odd as this place strikes a nerve with him, briefly.]

Elena, huh? I'm Rex.

What's weird about it...?

Uh, it doesn't exactly scream twenty-first century? Some of the buildings outside look like they could belong in London, but apparently that's not where I am.

Is that where you're from? [ Twenty first century - that's a long way off. ]

I've never heard of London - all I know is that this place is called Anatole, and a door or something, brought a lot of people here. Yourself included.

Yeah, so from my perspective? This is all a little on the strange side. Not that I'm completely unfamiliar with strange stuff.

[Never heard of London? Okay. Right. Skipping that part for now.]

A door. Great. So if I go back to it, I should be able to just walk back through and end up where I'm supposed to be, right?

Your friends probably aren't here.

Given the lack of response? Probably not.

[A pause.]

But you know...whatever. I'll just find my way out of here and get to them if they can't get to me.

Yeah, good luck with that.

[and lo! a link.]

here.

[back to voice:] Basically, you're fucked over and stuck here.

Aw man. Talk about a wall of text!

[Sigh. Not as though he's got anything better to do at the moment than read it all, however. Plus if he's going to find his way around and hopefully out of Anatole, he'd going to need the info.]

[He's quiet for a short while, reading it all over. Then:]

So the locals don't like us. Great. At least I'm already used to that treatment at home.

[Another couple of seconds pass in silence.]

Fear conjuring mist. ...I think I saw that once in a horror movie. This place sounds like a real load of laughs.

Believe me, the view from the ground doesn't get any less weird.

But there's plenty of networky goodness to go around, anyway.

Not scenery you're used to either, I guess? I seriously feel like I woke up in the middle of a giant movie set.

I dunno. If it were that good, I'd be in touch with Providence right now.

Yeah, I'm still sitting in the new arrival section, myself. I'm feeling pretty prepped for a close up, too.

Probably not going to get in touch with Providence, though. Just so you know.

Yeah? So where and when are you from?

No, I won't. I'm still gonna go check out the door that apparently dumps everyone here, though. I've been told it's only one way, but I'm not taking any one's word on that until I try it myself.

Welcome to the most magical place in...the world. Sort of.

Actually, not really.

Yeeeaaah, "magical" isn't the word I'd use, especially after reading that guide thing. This place seems like it's got some severe issues.

It does. I guess it's part of it's 'charm'.

Kinda leaves me wondering who would actually find this crazy place charming. Someone with a twisted sense of humor, maybe.

So who am I speaking with, here? A name to go with the voice would be great.
