So...I've been wondering.

[Normally those words coming from Elena would be enough to send a chill down one's spine. Because they would be followed by rambling and disjointed thoughts, jumping from one subject to the next and enthusiasm at all the wrong things.

But this time her thoughts are eerily clear and concise. Even her voice is softer.]Do ( Read more... )

I used to think it was better to be a follower...but I've been thinking lately, as well...that maybe that's only okay for a period of time, you know? That sometimes you've gotta lead.

Um, Elena? Can I ask what this is about?

I used to think that too, all of it.

Sasori's gone. And Riza-

I'm not a leader, Kunsel. I'm just a...rookie.

...Hey, wanna go grab a couple drinks? Off duty, both of us.

[A drink? Off duty?

And then, a surprising answer.]

Yeah. I think I would.

It depends on what you're best suited for.

And how do you know what you're best suited for?

[Pause]

I think I can answer my own question, actually.

[ Glad to be of service! Light's silence has inklings of polite expectation, a do-go-on kind of air. ]

If you try to lead and fail, then you're obviously meant to be a follower. Stick to what you do best, huh?

Neither.

[She has to think about that one for a minute.

Okay, two minutes.]

Is that even possible?

If you lead, you blame yourself for the loss of those beneath you. If you follow, you focus too much on protecting the leader, thus your own life is cut short, causing the leader to blame themselves for failing to lead properly. If you neither lead nor follow, nobody dies.

[Elena's heart skipped a bit. That someone she barely knew, if at all, could sum up her entire existence so easily...

But he obviously got it.]

Yeah! But then....doesn't that make you like ghost or something?

I don't think either is necessarily better or worse. It depends on the person, what they're good at. Though sometimes it's even more important to be willing to do both.

But I wanna be good at everything.

[And therein lies the problem.]

[There's a little chuckle at that. Unlike some might, he doesn't say that's unrealistic or impossible.]

There's nothing wrong with that. But it's just as important to hone your strengths as work on improving your weaknesses.

That sounds really time consuming.

[Which she doesn't necessarily mind.

Her next question comes out sounding so serious that...she might just be serious.]

When do you have time to hide the bodies?

That depends on who you follow.

Good leaders are pretty rare. Apparently.

If you don't have a good leader, and you can't be a good leader, make yourself a third option.

...I do enjoy making things.

[Mistakes. Accidental posts. Holes in buildings.

Whatever becomes of this will probably be your fault, Clare.]
