[She's moved toward the other woman, unable to stop herself from reaching to to try and steady her, because it doesn't matter if she's been drinking, fine. What's important here is that she's alive. Fuck the fact that she's crying - it hasn't yet registered to her that anyone has seen any of this - and their voices join a sea of internal (and instant) considerations. So many things at one - possibilities - timelines? Had they just fought? What was the last thing that she remembered? Oh, jesus, had she died already - alone and waiting for Lilly to answer her phone? (You called the wrong number, mother, why did you call the office, why didn't you just---) Only she stops short.]

Mother, give me back the Forge.

Please.

[ellen sways and steps back, legs hitting a table. her speech is less slurred than earlier but slurred enough. how much vodka is flowing through her system, still?]

Why? I want t'know. [ellen rush, alcoholic extraordinaire, can make even slurring sound hideously spiteful. what a gift.] 'Bout the people you aren't too good for!

[she's reaching out again, wincing as her mother stumbles (amazing how the instinct is still there, isn't it?) and half-tripping over herself as she does, fingers closing around the device as she tries to keep the waver out of her own voice.]

What.

[Tugging at it just a bit.]

I'm not "too good" for----

----you weren't here. [You were dead.] How do you even do this? Five minutes and we're already...

...I'm already feeling guilty when there was no way for me to even---

[And it's out before she can even think about stopping it.]

---where's your Forge, mom? Did you leave it at the Foxhole? Because the only part of this that makes any sense is that the first thing you do when you get here isn't to call me, or even look for me, it's to find the bar. Well---

[Oh. God.]

I'm sorry. Mom. I'm...
