Petruccio gasps at the sight of the city around them, at the roofs dusted in the fine coating of snow. It’s rare for them to even get this much in Firenze, and you grin at your fratellino, keeping a firm grip on his shoulders so that he won’t slip on the tiles-Federico already fell once this morning.

“Oh, Ezio! It’s amazing! Thank you so so so much for showing me!"

"Petruccio!" Federico pretends to scold, "Don't you know whose idea it was to bring you up here?"

You laugh as the baby of the family bristles like an irate sparrow.

"But Fede! Ezio is the one who carried me up here! You did not even help him!"

Federico's response, however, is cut short by a ball of snow colliding with his head-Claudia is leaning out the window of her room, preparing her next missile. You lower yourself to Petruccio's level, trying to make yourself less of a target as Federico curses and brushes the powder out of his hair-and gets hit by another. Claudia has always had good aim; you can recall taking more than one doll to the head during past fits.

"Bastardi! It's not fair that you take Petruccio up and don't even bother to ask me!" Her curses continue (most of them probably picked up from Federico and yourself). Mother will probably scold you both for teaching them to Claudia when she finds out. Luckily she's out with Father at some event of Signor Lorenzo's, and it's a simple matter of asking Annetta to keep the servants qui-

"Ezio! Federico!"

You shoot Federico a nervous glance, and lean out to peer over the edge of the roof to the Palazzo's courtyard, already swept clean of snow by the servants. Mother's not at Signor Lorenzo's after all. Damn. Neither is Father, but at least he looks amused...

"Bring your brother down from there this instant, or I shall give your sister a wagon's worth of snow to pelt you with."

[ It's a happy memory, but only ever recalled with melancholy. ]
