Depends.

Couple of days, over a week... sometimes forever.

I see. I was told...people come back, usually.

Sometimes, yeah, but I wouldn't bank on that, pal. I was out for almost two weeks. Even that's long enough for people to stop expecting anything.

Thank you for the information, then.

...The longest we've had is ten days. The average seems to be about three days?

...Taichou?

[The question is there, in his voice. He just doesn't say it outright.]

I'm worried about Dawn.

I knew this guy, who knew this other guy, and they were the
best of friends, even fought the same war together. One day
the second guy goes missing, reported killed in action just
a bit later. The first guy, however, he refused to let hope
just slip away. He stayed positive, believed that no matter
the odds, he and his friend would see each other again some
day...
Even when things looked grim, he never gave up hope.
And then one day, years and years later...the wait was over
just like that. Their paths crossed again, and now they are
hard pressed to even be separated.
I guess what I'm trying to say is...she'll come back. Don't
doubt that for a second. Even if things look bad...it'll be
more meaningful to her if people don't give up hope.

That's a very nice story - thank you.

[And he does actually sound totally sincere, there]

From what I've heard it varies. But do not forget that nothing is constant about this place.

Maybe that is the only constant.

Who are you waiting for?

Perhaps so.

[Pause. Sigh]

Dawn.

[Oh. Alphonse's friend. Have a little sigh back.]

Alphonse is taking her [slight pause - choosing her words carefully, here.] disappearance very hard.

If there is anything I can do, if I can look for her, please tell me.

[Because Remus is going to live, but goddammit, she wants to hit things. And her apartments are full of cracked glass and reminders of just what the fuck went wrong over the last week. Her place in Dismas is no better. And she can't sit in the clinic forever.]

I'm not surprised - they seemed close.

The impression I've gotten is that whatever's happened, there's little we can do but wait.

Is your friend alright?

Nothing is guaranteed. It is pointless to ask.

[Sigh. He knows this is your way of trying to be helpful Byakuya, but he just doesn't have the emotional energy to handle it today]

I see.
