Maybe it reminds him of something, and makes him think this boy shouldn't be left out there in the Mist alone.
He gets a bit of cloth and wraps it around his mouth, unsure if that will help or not, and starts out into the mist, keeping his mind focussed on reality and trying to breathe as little as possible as he wanders the streets, referencing the image on the Forge to make sure he's going the proper direction whenever possible.
It takes him some time, and he's hearing screams he's sure aren't there by the time he finds the silver-haired boy, and he leans down to touch his shoulder lightly.]

He hears Ansem whisper into his ear - lies, all of them, but beautiful lies, but that's from behind. So Riku looks up and stares at a face he doesn't recognize, but can see melting, slowly melting into inky blackness.
His breath hitches again in panic and denial and he murmurs more apologies, more pleas to be forgiven, to be left alone. He drops the Forge in his scramble to get away before his own heart is taken.]

He watches the boy's face with his eyes as calm as possible, regulating his breathing, and releases him as he scrambles and drops the Forge. Picks it up and turns it off, placing it in the pocket of his sleeve for safekeeping while he reaches out to touch the boy again.]

[He's talking to a heartless, he thinks, and laughs, sharp and not quite sane. Well, that's fine too. And he knows where he's going to be taken or rather what will be taken but...
But that's okay. There's nothing left, anyway, when he already destroyed the only ones he ever cared for.]
