[The camera flicks on and you see a sudden flash of white. After it focuses, you can see it's a man (or a boy?)'s shoulder. He moves his hand up and reaches for his hair, which is just as white as his shirt, and barely visible on screen.]

Isn't this interesting.

[The hand moves away, and there's a soft "hmm". He doesn't move, and most of all, ( Read more... )

[it takes a little while for Mello to figure out what the hell to say. His contemplation begins with a stream of curses, but by the time he gets to the end of it, all he really has is...]

Well, isn't this fucking inevitable?

[There's a soft rustle of paper, as Near destroys his current card castle only to build it all over again. When he finally speaks, the tone is as flat as ever, even though he feels somewhat relieved.]

I suppose it is, Mello.

Seems like everywhere I go, there you are. I'm starting to feel a little stalked.

I assure you that is not my intention. Besides, I could say the same for you.

Again?

Join the club. We're fresh out of monster and mutant spawn right now, but maybe if you stick around long enough they'll show up.

Yes. This has happened to me before.

How wonderful. You said "right now"-- does this mean there have been monsters before? If so, of what kind?

A few of us have had that problem. Makes for some interesting conversations.

The monsters don't really show up in the city much, but sometimes they'll pop in the same way the rest of us have. We had a dragon come in once, set half the place on fire and leave little parasites behind. Mind you, by little I mean fucking huge and flying, but it's relative.

Then you got your basic zombies, mutant humanoids, giant wolves... some new shit just started coming in, too. I'm not sure anyone's really keeping track.

Might be the least of your worries here, though. You just got here and already Mello's having a fit.

I can imagine.

Is there anything stopping those creatures from attacking us at all? Other than luck, that is.

So I see. Would it be too much to ask you to stop him from killing me, at least in the near future?

It's definitely not an illusion, I can tell you that much.

So I gathered. There's always the possibility of that happening, however.

It does happen if you go too far out into the mist, so I don't recommend doing that.

This has happened to you before?

I see. Anything else I should be particularly careful of?

Yes. Approximately six months ago.

'I'm certain that there are many other people in the same situation as me, given the data I gathered so far.'

Is that so? And just how long did it take you to figure that one out, master sleuth? Perhaps you have more golden nuggets of wisdom you wish to share with the audience? *cackle*

Honestly now, the only carefully crafted illusion I seem to see within my sights is a snow blizzard obscuring the camera. You may want to fix that, you know. *giggle*

By all means, go right ahead with your babbling. I hadn't been that entertained in a while.

Ah, is that a deflection I see? Please, try to come up with something a bit better than that. I could just about die from sheer boredom here.

Only monster around here is the jagoff killing people.

While I agree with you on calling that person a monster-- if it is a person, of course-- I was referring to a more literal kind of monster. The kind that is capable of destroying an entire city just by stomping around.
