[Junpei's wandering around the market, scouting for something for lunch, and some other odds and ends. He spots a little red-haired girl just staring at a fruit stand. The girl snatches a shiny red apple and hides it behind her back and starts to take off. Junpei quickly gets in her way. In her haste, she nearly bumps into him.]

An apple, huh? Looks pretty good. I'm kinda hungry, myself. Here, I'll get myself one, and treat you to yours. How's that?

[The little girl is wide-eyed, trembling slightly. She nods slowly and hands him the stolen apple. Approaching the stand, he pays for the fruit. He walks back to the girl and hands one to her.]

There you go!

[He squats down in front of her, his eyes level with hers, pats her on the arm. He chomps down on his apple and begins speaking with his mouth full.]

So where's your dad? Or mom? You're not here by yourself, are you?

[Hunger wins out over fear, and she takes a huge bite out of her (paid for!) apple, nervously eyeing him. Yoma eat guts, not apples. And from the enthusiasm with which this kid is chewing his apple - a safe bet he isn't a yoma. MAYBE.

Nodding yes until she's finished chewing.]

Mom and dad are...

[She shakes her head, blinks. If she's not dreaming this, maybe she dreamt what had come before?]

...somewhere else. Home, I think.

Hey, no problem. And "mister"? Pfft. I'm not old enough to be a "mister".

[He smiles. He's concerned that the girl is alone, but doesn't want to scare her any more than she seems to be already by asking her about it. Time for that later, but first...]

You can call me Junpei! What's your name, kid?

[He takes another bite of apple.]

[Why did you ask her that in the middle of a bite? Now she's chewing very fast and wiping her mouth with the back of her hand before she answers.]

[He chokes on the apple, coughs and sputters a little. Waitaminnit. She kinda totally looks like... But that can't be...]

Uh, heheh, sorry. It's just, I know a really pretty lady named Irene. We're like, really good friends. I saved her life, she taught me how to use my sword better, stuff like that. We go way back. [Cuz "way back" totally means "a few months".] Anyway, you kinda look like her. [Just like her, if she were, you know, a little kid.]

Um. So where are you from? Why are you here by yourself?

[Now this Irene thing is nagging at him. He's kind of forgotten about the apple. And if Junpei is forgetting about food, you know something's getting to him.]
