[ Yea verily, though River doth search both high and low for her friend the wizard, which caused her many strange adventures in ye olde fairgrounds, a time yet cometh whereby, when the limit of her patience hath been reached, she shalt venture forth to the physician's tent in order to summon Remus in a way henceforth known as "cheating". ]

[ And he shall answer her summoning, stepping forth from the back wall like a painting that's gotten fed up with two dimensions ]

Hullo, River.

Remus!

[ she holds up a plastic bag with a little goldfish swimming inside it. ]

Help me name it.

[laughs and takes a closer look.]

Well well. How'd this come about?

[without turning his back on her, finds a beaker from the supply cabinet.]

I liberated it from its wooden prison.

Wooden?

[sets the beaker on the table. Over the next few responses, he'll use his wand to transmogrify it, like glass blowing, into a proper fish bowl.]

Mm, a barrel. Not metaphorical.

[ watches with wide eyes. magic is so cool. ]

[continues working, rifling through his mental library as he does.]

In Buddhist mythology, fish symbolise happiness and freedom. In Norse mythology, it's adaptability with the flow of life. In African and East Indian, and I believe China, it's creation and abundance-as in Christianity. Greco-Roman, it's transformation.

[glances back at her and smiles] Not to overburden one small creature with so much expectation.

[finishes the bowl and turns, setting it down close to her] Along such lines, a friend of mine named her pet after a friend she's missed.

[ River picks up the bowl one-handed, spins it lightly - the balance is lovely. She puts in the fish, still in its little bag. ]

Fish out of water, hook line and sinker, fish in a barrel, a shark scenting blood, memory of a fish, plenty of other fish in the sea... [ A shrewd look at that last. ] It will need to acclimatize. [ To do so it will require fresh water to acclimatize to, but she seems to have overlooked that step. ]

Who do you miss the most?

[he looks at her, not aware that it's okay he can't express an answer, since their faces march through his eyes. PommaLilySiriusAlbusHarry. but the one he misses most is the one that's-]

Here.

[diverting by stepping toward the bowl again and pointing his wand into it.[ Aguamenti.

[There's your water, River.]

Thank you.

[ She's nothing if not polite. As always, her face lights up at the sight of magic being used for the mundane, and she comes to cup her hands around the sphere of glass, staring raptly into its depths. ]

Poor little fish. World keeps getting bigger. Maybe I'll call it Jonathan.

HA!!! I'd been thinking Serenity, but hey... lumenrelegandus June 2 2011, 05:29:07 UTC
[Lupin's braced hand slips on the tabletop, nearly toppling himself and the bowl. He steadies both.

Glances at her.]

From your world?

[Looks at her thoughtfully. Any embarrassment or shock is superseded completely by the balancing act: concern and interest, support and restraint; how much to ask, and to offer.

It's been clear to him before now what she's capable of, but he's avoided addressing it directly. Thinking she would bring it up if she wanted to, that it wasn't a problem unless it caused problems for her by others, and that no doubt, in a world without Scorched, it had probably done, very dominantly, just that. And that she may well have been hunted and used for it.

But might it be a problem for her own peace…? Is that his business?

It feels, in this moment, that they've come far enough-and she just crossed a line of intimacy with him, with seeming deliberation-that he can risk an opening.]

Do you do that at will?

[At the least, it does have to be refreshing, having someone really not mind that she can read his secrets.]

[ Cue a short pantomime of looking around the tent, a deliberate reminder of where they are. ]

It's your business.

[ Oh, a pun. Works better in Chinese. And when the first part is vocalized aloud. ]

[ River shifts back on her heels, chin up to the ceiling, flexing her spine a little. There was another question, wasn't there? Yes: her limitations. ]

Sometimes. Can't turn it off. Can't pick and choose. Can't always tell what's real.

[takes the cue by removing his wand and points it in a sweeping motion around the walls of the tent]

Muffliato.

[returns wand to jacket, knowing he doesn't have to explain that they can speak more privately now.

To her description, nods slowly]

Do you ever want to turn it off?
