I read a biography about one of Dickens' children a while back and it completely changed my opinion about the man. For the worse, obviously.

Ooh, do tell! Was it the one who married his friend and was disowned, or the one who followed the wife's sister around? Obviously I do not know their real names. But, HA! Dickens was a dick.

Um. Now I want to know about those children! It was his favourite (and I bet that didn't start any complexes in the other children!). And he was such a bastard to his wife.

I think the unfinished book was 'The mystery of Edwin Drood,' but I haven't checked that and it could be completely wrong. I've never liked Dickens writing much but began to really loathe him as a person when I read this quote attributed to him "Mrs Gaskell would be a much better writer if her husband beat her more."

From what I've read, that sounds utterly typical of the man. Urgh.
