This is partly you being a keener, and partly winter being a keener! First snow last year wasn't until late January. It was a full two months earlier this year.
Last year I didn't do it until I had a reason, in other words a certain location near Du College metro that was a quicker bike trip than metro.
This year it was more a matter of "that was ridiculous, let's not have a repeat of last year." Plus tashamonster came over to work on her winter bike...
Sorry, I somehow missed your original reply but got Dave's.
Yeah, what he said (the frame I'm using cost me $10 or so and has no particular sentimental value) plus:
You need a studded front tire for control in the conditions we get around here. There are also things that are nice that my winter bike has: internal gearing so you can shift no matter what (derailleurs eventually freeze in place due to salt and road gunk), a roller brake that doesn't ice up like rim brakes can, a generator hub on the front to run lights without messing around with batteries, and really wide tires on special rims for more traction.
Wow. Those rims are HUGE! Winter biking must be harder than during normal summer months - not only having to fight the weather, but heavier equipment to battle the weather. (I don't even like mountain bikes because the tires are so wide compared to my road bike.)

I'm just starting to think that perhaps it's getting chilly enough at night that I don't want to wear shorts to bike to work in the morning (~+4°C)
