(I have worn sandals and dresses to ancient ruins, btw, but practical ones- trainers, socks and waistbands in 70F+ heat result in deeply unpleasant nasty, damp stickiness and I'd rather avoid that, hence light, loose-ish dresses with low-heeled sandals or very lightweight trainers. However, ome of the European women I've seen have been glammed up to a degree that even *I* find laughable...)
