This made me cry. Because it is better than Phantom Menace and yet--the better version will never be made, never exist, and all I'll have is the stupid original movie.
'Tis true...especially since George Lucas will never relinquish control of those movies to anyone else...ever...I'm sure it will be in his will.
Even just on a simpler note, I think the Obi-Wan/Padme thing would have worked so much better in that first movie. Imagine if Anakin/Padme had the two kids and we leave the third movie with him basically looking after her children, secretly carrying a torch for her all those years later. Sorry, that's the sappy romantic in me :P
I was more fascinated by the concept of not killing Darth Maul. The idea is so simple yet genius. We did need a driving evil force for Obi Wan. And Obi Wan could of had some proper epic emotional shit to watch.
Personally, I just liked the idea of the movies focusing on Obi-Wan. Ewan McGregor could at least make some of the lines tolerable...which is more than a lot of the cast can boast.
But yeah, their argument regarding Darth Maul as a motivator for Obi-Wan made a lot of sense. It's a shame...
