When reading Ryan's section on virtual space, I immediately thought of Second Life, a virtual world in which space can be purchased with real world money. In some way, Second-Life has unlimited space, and yet the confines of the Internet must give some limitation. I also agree that it is strange people would spend more time and money on a virtual life than their actual one. My sisters are obsessed with an Internet game called "Runescape" and you have to pay every month in order to play. My sisters play the game all day and instead of meeting their friends outside, exercising their bodies in the fresh air or communicating with them in life, they meet them on the game instead--they seem to have more fun in the virtual world going on adventures and completing missions. There's a fascination for that which we cannot do in reality, hence the reason why so many children (and adults) enjoy reading and playing fantasy. They become another person which would be difficult to play out in the real world. In many ways, we create a second identity when playing games, we can experiment, take risks, and do things we would never do in real life because we know we can always start over and its not true ( ... )
