Rodney missed distractions. Granted, the kind of distractions he'd had to deal with on Atlantis had been of the mortal danger variety, and he didn't much enjoy those. "Hey there, McKay," Sam said as she walked by. "What are you doing sneaking around like that?" Not that Rodney really needed a reason; it was his hut and he could do whatever, but Sam liked to give him a hard time now and then, since she wasn't his boss anymore and she totally could.

If they had been talking about anything less serious than the current topic, Sam would have made a really snarky comment right there, but it so wasn't the time. "Ha," she said instead. "I get the idea that this place really wants us to get used to that particular feeling."

"That seems to be the most likely hypothesis," Rodney sighed. He was silent for a moment.

Then: "Thanks, Sam," he said as he looked at her, a not-so-Rodney-McKay-like smile - in other words, a sincere one - making a brief appearance on his face.

"Hey, you're welcome," she said, also sincere. "Anytime, McKay." Sam was pretty crap at her own personal life, but she was okay at giving advice on other people's problems--at least, she thought so.
