The first thing Rodney noticed when he woke up was the noise. More specifically, the lack of it ( Read more... )

"If you're a woman, I will so believe it," Jill mumbled into the crook of her arm, lifting one hand to absently try and swat Rodney away. Whatever it was, it was too early and if it was too early for Jill, then it had to be too early for Rodney. There was no good reason for him to be awake already, even if he was a woman.

Cracking open one eye, she looked at him over her pillow, making sure he was still a man, then slowly lifted herself on one arm when she realized that she wasn't in the same room she'd fallen asleep in. "What the hell..." Trailing of, she looked around the room, eyes widening the further she looked until she saw the balcony doors and the city beyond.

"Oh, I didn't even think about that," Jill murmured, sounding and feeling horribly guilty. They weren't doing anything wrong, of course, the island situation made things very different, but at the same time, Katie wouldn't know that.

"Do you want to go after her?" she asked, although she didn't really want him to do that. If Rodney took off, she'd be stuck here alone and if Rodney took off after her, then she'd really be stuck here alone.

"No," Rodney sighed, dragging a palm down his face. "There's no point. What am I going to tell her? 'Sorry, honey, I've been stranded on a desert island for a year and a half while probably no time at all has passed here and fallen in love with another woman?'" Actually, that didn't sound too bad, but it probably would to Katie.

Oh well.

"Let's just...go and get you some clothes," he said, reaching for Jill's hand again.

"Well, that's not something I'd want to hear," Jill agreed, thinking of how that would have sounded coming from David's mouth if he'd said as much to her after returning from China. Or worse, after a single night had passed. She never would have believed it of him, would have just pegged it as a ridiculous excuse to not see her anymore.

Threading her fingers with Rodney's, she squeezed lightly and gave him a smile. "It'll work out. Somehow."

"Yeah," Rodney said, but he didn't sound as if he believed it. He didn't expunge any more on the subject on the way to the commissary, though.

After explaining to the officer on duty that Jill was a scientist visiting from Earth (technically correct) and that her clothes had been lost in transit (also technically correct), he was signed out a couple of spare uniforms, which he handed to Jill as he turned to leave. "That guy owes me," he told her. "He won't say anything. He broke his laptop a while back trying to play an illegal copy of Fallout 3 and I fixed it for him." But not before getting in a few hours of play time himself, of course.
