Rodney was woken up ridiculously early that morning - that is, before one o'clock in the afternoon - by a familiar sound. That didn't mean, however, that it was by any stretch of the imagination a welcome sound. In fact, it was a distinctly annoying sound - the sound of a dog in distress ( Read more... )

Returning to the hut, it wasn't a complete surprise to find Rodney already there and waiting for her, although Jill wasn't sure he'd ever just let himself in before. And especially not with John's dog in tow, but she said nothing at the sight of the animal curled up on the floor by her bed. At least he wasn't barking or peeing all over everything and he didn't seem too interested in trying to eat any of her work.

"Hey," she said, greeting Rodney and leaning over to kiss him quickly before she went to her desk to put down the papers she'd been carrying. "Am I late? I didn't think we were supposed to meet until a little later."

"We were supposed to meet?" Rodney repeated dully, hardly even seeming to notice when Jill kissed him. "Sorry. Uh, I'm a little...distracted."

He was starting to feel stupid for running to Jill's like this. But there was the possibility he wasn't worrying over nothing, which worried him even more.

"Of course we were," Jill answered, turning to Rodney with a frown. There was something wrong and her frown deepened, her gaze going briefly to Cash before she crossed the room again and grabbed a chair, sitting down in front of Rodney. "What's going on? Is everything okay?"

It sure as hell didn't look like everything was okay, but it could have been anything.

Bizarrely, now Rodney didn't even want to say anything for fear it might worry Jill. He bit his lip.

"I'm going to have to dogsit until Sheppard gets back," he said after a moment or two, gesturing at Cash, who was being surprisingly peaceful. "The idiot left the dog in his hut and forgot to take him with...wherever he's gone. You haven't seen him, have you?" He tried to sound casual about it, despite the lead brick of dread in his stomach.
