Yeah but you've been doing some super rad stuff that not many people get to do. There will always be parties.

I totally hear that. You could be stone cold sober and see your friends and feel like you're high for days!

A lot of djs think too hard about what they do. I've seen improvisers do some of the coolest stuff, that got a hell of a reaction out of the crowd, and you just knew that they were pulling a good part of it out of their ass.

True. However, a lot of improv people like that can do it alright, but if they planned it or put in more forethought, it could be a lot better.

I've set myself up to deliver the best every time. So, if I didn't obsess over it, sure it would sound fine, but not fantastic. And if you just sound like everyone else, then what's the point?

The people who are really good at improvising don't necessarily need to plan, that's the thing. They just live playing records all the time to where they know their music up and down. I'm not really talking about the people who just sound alright. But some music is more suited to improvisation, and some isn't. Psychedelic trance definitely isn't (at least to me, fuck that!). It's got all of those long, dramatic sorts of builds and stuff. But slam and cut and mash sort of music is kind of weak if a person can't think to improvise or tweak around a little. Especially when it comes to really syncopated or mid-tempo sort of stuff. And if soundclashes are what you do, then you pretty much have no choice to improvise a lot of the time. I guess it really comes down to the medium and the type of music a person is into playing.

I think the need to plan alot for dj sets is largely a limitation of CDJs now. I can improvise a psytrance set in traktor anytime.

CDJs are just so... clunky

Recompression, as in Vancouver's version of Burning Man?

Yes!

Hey aren't you Caitlin's friend? She was telling me about you (she wanted us to meet). Apparently you were at Phosphene and I never ran into you.

Yes! I vaguely remember her wanting me to meet someone. Now I'm curious.

Thanks!!

I'm playing next at Organix @ Club 23 on May 15th. If you are on Face Book, search for "Juice Box @ Organix May 15th" and the event should come up. :)

btw, OkCupid matched us on Quiver. Vancouver is a small city, at least virtually.

I'll remember: May 15.

Haha oh really? What is your username on OKC??

Yeah May 15th from midnight to 1:30am. It's free before 10:30pm, or if Caitlin is going, I can put her on the list +1.
