New Film Idea

I was watching Air Force One on TNT this weekend and though about how much I'd like to avert the unnecessary stupidity and sometimes bloodshed in most films. If the characters would just pay a little more attention and act logically at the beginning, most crises could be averted.

Tora! Tora! Tora!: In the original, Japan bombs Pearl Harbor. In my version, America lifts their embargo against Japan, allowing the Americans aggressively to enter the war in 1943 with resources they were able to devote to producing fission weapons two years earlier than they actually did (because they weren't fighting a war on two fronts), thereafter negotiating a peaceful surrender of both Japan and Germany.

A Game of Thrones: Ned Stark decides not to become Hand to a domineering, whoring, racist, alcoholic king. Nobody dies.

Star Wars: A New Hope--Luke does not foolishly remove R2D2's restraining bolt. He is at home when the stormtroopers arrive, and is killed with his aunt and uncle. The Rebellion is crushed, and the Emperor continues his rule.

Star Wars: Phantom Menace: Qui-gon abides by the Counsil's desicion, and dumps Anakin back on Tatooine with his mother. Unconfused by Anakin's presence, the Jedi are able to uncover Darth Sidious before he can take over. Peace reigns throughout the galaxy.
(Alternatively--Obi-wan heeds the Counsil's decision, and dumps Anakin back on Tatooine with his mother. Unconfused by Anakin's presence, the Jedi are able to uncover Darth Sidious before he can take over. Peace reigns throughout the galaxy.)

Either way, George Lucas has a lot less money.

Shawshank Redemption: Andy Dufresne refrains from killing his wife. Therefore, he doesn't go to jail.

But Andy didn't kill his wife! It was the crazy guy that the younger kid (the one Andy tutored) met while in another prison. Andy was innocent!

Right, the prison guards shot the kid because he was "trying to escape." But really, the warden had him killed.

Spirited Away: Chihiro's parents decide to keep driving and not go down the creepy kami-road. (Or whatever the little critters are called.)

Lord of the Rings (Jackson version): Elrond flying-tackles Isildur and falls with him into the Cracks of Doom, committing suicide but saving all of Middle-Earth and Frodo's innocence at the same time.

The Little Mermaid: Rather than quashing her creative tendencies, Triton encourages his daughter to go exploring (with a protective escort of fellow explorers) and she never gets so frustrated that she goes to visit the Sea Witch. Her obsession with Prince Eric eventually fades, like all infatuations, and she marries a suitable mer-prince.

The Princess Bride: Humperdinck is strangled in his cradle.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Will Turner drowns rather than finding a floating piece of board.

Lord of the Rings (Bakshi version): Bakshi is strangled in his cradle.
