My thoughts on SUCKER PUNCH

Mar 26, 2011 17:44

Kay so a while back I saw a preview for Sucker Punch in theatres... my initial reaction was "oh god they're supposed to be in an insane asylum yet they have perfect hair or make up? give me a break". The action scenes looked interesting, but other than that I completely forgot about it ( Read more... )

Umh... Hi... I saw this post on someone's f-list and I appologise for ranting in your journal when you don't know me at all. :)

Movies are always about men. TV series, video games, books, in politics, religions, and in old legends.

I KNOW AND IT ANNOYS ME SO MUCH!
And when there is a female protagonist it's all about her falling in love with a guy. Because apparently that is all women are about and apart from finding the perfect man they have no other goals in life. Men have romances too, but that hardly ever is the main focus of their stories.
And I am not surprised it got bad reviews. This often happens when the movie is actually about women. Even with a masterpiece like Thelma and Louis, people criticised the movie for being too violent. I am sure they would never have said that if it had been about two men instead of two women on the run.

But YAY!! for more women-centred stories. I think I really need to watch this movie.

Anyway, sorry for the long rant, but you touched a sore spot there. :)

Hello! :D Ahhh I'm glad to see someone out there who agrees. I swear, all the reviews I see of this movie are negative, but I think people really need to question why they're saying it's bad... Apparently the plot is over done, but would they say the same thing if the whole cast was men? Ugh it's so annoying to read. ><

I hope you watch the movie and enjoy it! ^^

This sounds interesting. I saw an advert for it last night for the first time and thought it looked pretty but that was about it.

I probably won't see it in the cinema because I never seem to go these days, but if it becomes availiable for rental I'll be all over it.

Yesss you must rent it. The only reason I wouldn't want to see it in theatres again is because it costs about 10$ here lol.

We went to see it today! We saw the preview when we went to watch Red Riding Hood and just HAD to see it. I found it to be absolutely amazing.

My favorite character was Sweet Pea. She was, at first, stubborn, cocky, full of herself...but at the same time, she was a coward. By the end of the movie, she had grown a spine (mostly with the death of Rocket. ;_;). It was an interesting growth for what could be considered a minor character, since, of course, Baby Doll was the lead.

And I so agree with you on the whole women in media thing. Though, I do disagree with the "If the story absolutely HAS to have a romance plot to it, it'd be nice to see a story a lesbian could relate back to, you know?" Because, really, I can sit there and imagine that the man is just a really butchy lesbian in most cases. And that works for me. xD

Have you seen many lesbian-centered movies? If you're looking for a few good ones...

Oh I'm glad you liked it! :D Sweet Pea was a really... sweet (hurr) character, I mean she cared too much and was too afraid of being hurt. I'm glad she got to go home to her family in the end. T___T

The only movies out of those I've seen is Better Than Chocolate! It's interesting because it was filmed in Vancouver and I've totally been to the "Little Sister's Book and Art Emporium" the events were based off. I only vaguely remember that movie because I watched it in my early teens~

Haha it's pretty funny how I haven't seen But I'm a Cheerleader, however that's mostly because it's not like I can go out and rent these movies to watch at home... being all in the closet and everything lol. My friends and I should get together and watch lesbian movies together, thanks for the recommendations! ^^

She really was a sweet character, hiding behind the mask of utter nonchalance. A coping mechanism of sorts.

Definitely rewatch it when you can! It's one of my favorites of the bunch...nevermind, I can't pick favorites. xD And you guys should seriously have a lesbian movie night. It would be epic.
