Fall hiking

Oct 26, 2009 17:42

I realize I have a lot of friends right now that go hiking. I want to start doing this as I cannot go camping in the winter. Looking for good places to go to start getting some stuff together for it ie boots first. Can anyone give me a quick list of the must haves for hiking and places to go for good starter gear?

Basically, the Ten Essentials:

to do it right.

Baselayer, clothes (not cotton), good socks, good boots, a good pack.

Exactly what he said. REI is good for all that.

If you invest in one thing, it's footwear. Hiking boots are the best thing ever.

Indeed, because blisters SUCK.

ETA: and also joint damage sucks and good footwear goes a looooooooooooooooooooong way towards preventing that.

Also not slipping to your death is nice when you have good traction on your soles.

I bought my hiking boots at Second Ascent in Ballard.
My pack is from Cabela's down in Lacey.
My base layers are from REI - silk, I believe.

Everything else I have is from random places.

I'm happy with all my gear at the moment - you will definitely find gear that speaks to you :)

It's hard to go hiking here in the winter, it's raining, muddy and snowy up there. I would try snowshoeing this winter and hike in the spring.

and REI's bargin basement is good for cheap gear. You can get hiking boots that are already broken in there. It's used/returns but soo worth it.

Issaquah has great starter hikes and trails on both Tiger and Cougar Mountain

The most important thing for hiking is your hiking shoes and honestly since you will be doing day hikes, the most expensive. Everything else can be a bagpack, clothing in layers, water bottle, First aid kit and survival kit. So I'd suggest shopping for some comfortable, sturdy, waterproofed, good traction hiking shoes/boots
