Of Reading and e-reading

Of Reading
I don't know where it has come from, but I've been bitten by the reading bug. This month alone, I've read The Game, the majority of Sperm Wars, re-read Stephen King's On Writing, Lay Down with Dogs and about half of my old ethics textbook A Gift of Fire.

This does not count my reading (currently 170 pages) of Making of America. There ( Read more... )

get caught reading, e-readers, reading, books

What about Barnes & Noble's Nook? I got it for Texas, and it seems to work like a charm.

Of course, now that I've given it to her she hasn't/won't pick it up (though apparently she's a) going to get me one and b) is planning on using it a lot on the way to and from our honeymoon) so I can't say that she's reading more because of it - though with wedding stuff I guess it's understandable. Eh, I'm never going to understand her.

ANYWAYS!

Do you think you'll look into the Nook? However, it sounds like you'll be wanting the iPad for it's dual functions with word-processing and browsing capability, so it may be the best option for you.

Best of luck to you, sir!

I do intend to blog about this, but the short answer is, I don't like the Nook. It's too heavy. Too big for one-handed holding, to small for two. The screen won't rotate and the touch screen at the bottom needs work (plan to expound on this point in my upcoming blog which will run on The Watchful.

I plan on getting a Kindle with birthday money/student loans AFTER I secure a Time Capsule.

Now I'm by no means a god, but I can't remember in all my years of reading that I've ever had a reason to create light from darkness to read, other than flipping on a goddamn lightswitch.

This is one of those things where you're going to miss out on something fantastic because you get caught up in the stupid.

I didn't say I wouldn't buy a Kindle. What I said was that to me, one of the CONs of the device is that it doesn't provide it's own light source. This means that if you're in a situation where there's poor lighting, like, for instance, riding in a car at night, turning on a light may be disadvantageous. Early morning or late night reads in bed when you don't want to wake your spouse or the rest of the house come to mind as well.

I'm simply saying that since this is an electronic device, the fact that it doesn't produce illumination ought to go in the minus column.

In looking at the difference between the Nook and Kobo for my wife, I've decided on the Kobo because, as you know the Kobo is sold at Border's and the Nook is sold at Barnes & Noble and even though I like Barnes & Noble better AND they are integrated with Amazon which is a real plus, I was in Barnes & Noble at the mall one day and I saw some skate rats thumbing through the manga section and you know how much I dislike skate rats. Oh, and there was a Asian dude there picking his nose! HELLO! No thank you to the Asian man so you see why the Kobo is a better purchase.

Frankly no. It seems all convoluted and confusing to me. You should just compare the devices attributes, positive and negative and then make your decision.

There's this new book I want to read, but because it doesn't glow in the dark, they can go fuck themselves if they think I'm going to buy it.

Why the *fuck* should I have to have lights on to read a book? Its like the ENTIRE WORLD HAS GONE INSANE!

Barnes and Nobel isn't integrated with Amazon: Amazon is their direct competitor!

I'm so glad you are reading. Reading is good for the mind and soul. I'm almost finished with The Three Musketeers myself.

By the way, there is a funny video here you should watch it.
