I'm in a hole tonight, as planned. Planned holes are pleasant. You clamber down into the dark, wave at the world in the last dreg of light, then let go and disappear into a soft bed of hay. Everything you need is right across the way: a kitchen, some good music, a soft armchair next to a few choice books. The cat is already napping in her ( Read more... )

When I was a kid I used to eat turnips raw.

That aside, just make 'em like you would the purplish kind. I like them pureed/mashed. Ooh or I bet you could make an interesting soup... What about soup? An apple-turnip soup with those apples you bought. With nutmeg. And white pepper. And sprinkled with your parsley and maybe a dollop of sour cream or yogurt?

Oh dear, you should know better than to ask me these questions when I'm hungry. :)

The farmers who supply fancypants restaurant Oleana say turnips, so I will believe them. Rutabagas would be more fun to talk about though. Rutabaga! Rutabaga! Oh my god, I'm in a Frank Zappa song!

Take 24 turnips.

Strip off the leaves, and wash thoroughly.

Boil the resulting greens with one's favorite vegetarian substitute for bacon as well as one's healthy sea salt substitute for Morton's. A lot of greens cooks way down. Enjoy watching this happen.

Eat the resulting greens and then sing acts of praise from shape note hymals.

Pickle the turnips themselves, and serve with Armenian style chicken.

I am actually more excited about the greens than the turnips. But pickling sounds fun too.

You will speak more of this Armenian chicken, please?

First thing, cut off the greens. They will leech moisture from the roots and make the turnips root faster. And that will make the bunch more compact.

Other than that, I can't help you :) I've never cooked a turnip, so I am very interested in the responses you get.

Ooh, thanks. Now the greens fit in the crisper and the turnips can hang out on the counter for a day or so. Phew!

The comments on this post have made me crave turnips. I will have to pick some up this weekend.

I've never even eaten a turnip. This should be interesting.

Pick up some other wintry vegetables, like carrots, parnips, onions. Some celery. Cut it all up and simmer away in some vegetable broth with your parsley and any other herbs you like in a soup.
