Trust is something really hard to obtain let alone maintain. Someone does something unintentional and totally destroys all faith/trust you had in that person, then from that experience you can't trust as easily anymore.
Plus, it's always harder to trust once you've had your heart broken. The world is full of disappointment and lies. Have a little faith, but don't put all your eggs in one basket, yah?
