Dear mathematics textbook authors,

please, use a single numbering scheme for such things as definitions, theorems, lemmata, examples and so on - it makes it that much easier for the reader to find what they're looking for.

Just to give an example of what not to do, chapter 3 of the book I'm looking at right now has, in order,

1. Proposition 3.1

You'd think this would be more self-evident.

You'd think so - but the unhelpful numbering scheme in particular is surprisingly common in my experience.
