Commons POTY 2010

May 01, 2011 13:22

For those interested, the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year 2010 competition has opened; as in the previous years, the Picture of the Year will be chosen from all the pictures that were awarded Featured Picture status that year.

Find out whether you can participate here (the short version: you need to have registered a Wikimedia user account and made at least 200 edits on a single Wikimedia project (e.g. any Wikipedia edition) prior to 2011), add yourself to the list of voters, and once the bots have verified you're eligible, vote!

Here's the winners from the previous years, too:

2009 winner: Sikh pilgrim at the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar, India.

2008 winner: Horses on Bianditz mountain, in Navarre, Spain. Behind them Aiako mountains can be seen.

2007 winner: Broadway Tower in Cotswolds, England.

2006 winner: Aurora Borealis.

The Wikimedia Commons also recently passed 10 million files, and apparently will pass 10 terabytes soon, although I think that figure does not include deleted images, earlier versions of current images etc..

(Licenses for the above pictures: 2006 winner: public domain; 2007 winner: CC-BY 2.5, taken by Newton2, modified by Yummifruitbat; 2008 winner: CC-BY-SA 2.0, taken by Mikel Ortega, modified by Richard Bartz; 2009 winner: CC-BY-SA 3.0 et al., taken by Paulrudd. Thanks to y'all for the great pictures!)
