Star Trek

New Trek is a good movie. Good enough to pave over a handful of rather enormous plot holes, and keep me from caring about the slight bumpiness in the road. It's slick, ballsy and exactly what the franchise needed. I went with a group of die-hard and not-so-die-hard Trek fans (none of us consider ourselves Trekkies, exactly), and the reaction was ( Read more... )

I was O_o over the skirts for most of the movie. I mean they're cute but really? I know the planet was set back aways for a while but...can't they get some pants in there for the ladies?

What, don't you know that all women like to *really* feel the breeze?
...especially in space.:)

I wonder if it's because its supposed to be the 60s in space or something. Or just because they're cute. Which they are, but it would have been nice to see some variety. Some women in the skirt/dresses and some in pants. And what would have been grand? Some guys in skirts. I mean its the future right? We should be down with that as culture by that point, right?

I bet they thought that the skirts would be a nice nod to the original and you know, make fanBOYS happy.
...cause they're men and don't know how much not fun it is to be wearing inappropriate clothing when trying to appear professional and smart. Ah well.:)

Oo, having variation in the uniforms would have been nice save.

I hate it when I'm all *squee!yay!Didn't suck!* and can't do a review to save my life and then you're all articulate and shit.:D

--->Shiny, new, *interesting*. (s. The opposite of Enterprise.)
I fucking cried during the first ten minutes! (And then I laughed...continuously.:)

I can *so* work with this.

Yeah, this. I'm so going to end up writing fic, aren't I? :) Totally the opposite of Enterprise's tired rehashing of old storylines. Though Voyager was the worst offender.

The first ten minutes were ridiculously awesome.

I have to say 'yes, please' for any potential fic. It would most winsome idea ever.:)

You know something is deeply wrong when the best part of a scifi series is a 'robotic' female in skintight catsuit.:) That just ain't right.

Voyager was just... ugh. Their original idea had potential, and then they proceed to airlock it at the earliest convenience, in favour of Next Gen 2.0.

I think if I do write, it'll be... Kirk/Spock/Bones friendship fic, Spock/Nyota and Kirk/Spock something. Oh man, we need downtime fic. What Sulu, Chekov et al do when they're not on the bridge. Kirk's horrible romantic mishaps, and all the ways the crew has to rescue him.

The other massive thing that bugged me (apart from "Why does a mining ship have a heavy arsenal?" was "Why is Kirk listening to music that's over 300 years old?"

I was considering mentioning that, but I iirc Kirk has been previously established to have a thing for old stuff. Specifically, old pop culture stuff. So that made it ok for me. However. It's never explained in the movie - he doesn't get a line about how awesome the music the 20th century was, or what have you - so it'll remain a sticking point for many viewers, I imagine.

I would almost bet it's in a scene that was cut out.

Sixty years later and the sister still does nothing but answer the phone? I really want to see this movie, but if the racial aspect of the non white characters all the same in that respect, I'm going to spit nails.

I just want it to be more than being a glorified receptionist, you know?

Cheers. I can buy a ticket to this movie now.

She still doesn't have as prominent a role as I'd like, but that seems to be more a function of her being a secondary character (not part of the OT3), than anything else. Though I warn you, the mini skirts are back, and there are some lingerie scenes - so no, it's not free of sexism.

Thanks! The secondary characters in general were underused, but I was happy that they all got a small moment to shine. That means that they'll be able to do even more in the inevitable sequels.

Uhura in particular needs a Big Moment, next time. In this film she had a series of small moments, which is great, but...
