I was in a similar position when I adopted my dachshund, Buddy. He had severe heartworms and later developed back problems. There was a little while that I was afraid I would have to give him back to the shelter (who did have a refund policy) because of the medical bills, but I couldn't. Now, he's one of the best parts of my life.
