My natural inclination is to have Sheppard far more hapless, but, yeah, I think he's gearing up to do that scary intense Black Colonel thing...

In fact I like to interpret the working relationship between Sheppard and Lorne in the way that Lorne is very different in almost everything (he's very probably not the black sheep of the Air Force, for one) but that he still chose to respect his CO unabashedly. And Sheppard on the other hand knows what he has in his 2IC and would never take it lightly if he was in danger of losing him. So yeah, makes very much sense he get off on the mercenary like that. Well, in my head ;)
