NEW YORK - A man who gets angry at work may well be admired for it but a woman who shows anger in the workplace is liable to be seen as “out of control” and incompetent, according to a new study presented on Friday.

One of the ex-friends, for inexplicable and unexplained reasons, chose not to be friend anymore with my wife (then with me when I found out). I suspect one reason is that, gasp, my wife gets ANGRY and channels it. I think he think my wife is incompetent because of it.

Sad, eh?

LOL! So, why aren't you running PG&E? Just kidding. :) It is interesting, and disheartening, the gap between what men "can" do in the workplace and what women "can do." It just shows how pervasive some stereotypes are, sadly.

Sorry I have been so scarce on lj...just haven't had anything much to say, but life trundles along ok. And it is good to hear from you, too. :)

I will email you with my addy now...there, done.

Yeah, I am sure it is a career killer. Women who get mad are "bitchy." Men who get mad are powerful.

BITCH = "Boys I'm Taking Charge Here."

This is unfortunately all too accurate. Behavior which in my male colleagues brings admiration from customers and vendors, gets me labeled as uncooperative, unprofessional, etc., etc.

It is very interesting to me that nobody on my f-list is contradicting this (didn't think they would) and that both men and women are saying essentially the same thing about this cultural tidbit.

My boss can yell and cuss at someone, and is admired for being 'straight and no-nonsense'. I don't yell, don't swear, but speak firmly and unemotionally and I'm a 'strident bitch'.
Gotta love it--not.

I think "not" is the more accurate. LOL! I do this thing in self-defense classes about "Act like a Man/Act like a Lady" in which the students get to name all the stereotypes of each. It's very interesting what comes up.

I think this may hold true even out here in academia...Angry women professors are viewed as "Shrill, bitchy" etc. whereas cranky, angry male professors are veiwed as "crotchety".

Yeah, the perception of women's anger is that it is the shrill, impotent anger of someone who can be bested and when they get mad it's because they've lost control and are flailing around uselessly. When men get angry, it's the powerful, take-charge anger of someone who is not to be messed with.
